Body Art Licensing & Inspection

ZMCHD provides inspection and licensing of tattoo and body piercing establishments.

Germs can easily be spread from person to person, especially when you are getting a tattoo or piercing.  The Body Art Program inspects and licenses body art facilities in Zanesville and Muskingum County and regulates the operations of the body artists in order to protect their customers and the general public.  The program also assists new business owners in planning their body art operation to ensure that they meet necessary standards.

Operating a Body Art Business
Any person who intends to operate a tattoo or body piercing business in Zanesville or Muskingum County must contact the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department. Plans must be submitted for approval in advance of the application for license for review. An application for a permanent license must be submitted at least 30 days before the anticipated opening date. A temporary license application must be completed and submitted with appropriate payment at least 10 days in advance of the first day of operation.

Annual License Fees
    -Permanent tattoo or body piercing operation: $250.00 per year
    -Temporary operation: $50.00 per license
