April is Healthy Homes Awareness Month

People in the United States spend about half of every day inside their homes. The quality of our homes greatly impacts our health. A healthy home can support wellness, while preventing disease and injury.

For the 2018 Health Homes Awareness Month, the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department (ZMCHD) is focusing on safe gardening.

More and more people are choosing to grow their own vegetables. Due to the large number of older homes in Muskingum County, there are several zip codes that are considered high risk for lead.

What is the problem? Lead in Muskingum County

If you live in one of these areas or in a home built prior to 1978 you should consider testing your soil for lead prior to gardening. Protect Your Children and Food From Lead in Your Garden

ZMCHD will be providing free soil tests for residents who are gardening in a high risk area, while supplies last.

Soil test kits can be obtained at the health department. Test Your Soil For Free

Additional soil testing can also be conducted through the OSU Extension Office. https://muskingum.osu.edu/soiltest
